This project was for the sweetest family, from India but grew up in Britain. They had purchased a gorgeous 1927 Georgian house in Cameron Park, walking distance from the Village District and Glenwood South, not far from Five Points. This house had been partially remodeled in the 1970s and so was a mish-mash of design from one room to another.

When I came in, this ground floor guest / kids’ bathroom was torn to pieces, and they needed an interior designer to put it back together in a modern style that fit in with the rest of the house. You can see the tiny shower, outdated wiring, and vent from the original boiler next to the doorway. The partition between the shower and tub had to stay structurally, but I worked in some additional storage around the water lines and pipes. The door opening to the left, next to the shower, was awkward and would have damaged the new frameless glass enclosure. I had the carpenter flip it to the other wall.

Plaster and lath were replaced with classic white subway tiles, contrasted with black granite – the shower header was necessary to hide piping and also to put in more lighting. They were afraid it would be too dark or masculine, but the white tile, reglazed tub, and new light fixtures kept it bright. To tone down the hard linear lines of the tile, I brought in tumbled river rock for the backsplash and the shower floor. The live edge on top of the wainscoting softens the aesthetic with an organic feel.

A diminutive single vanity became a double with ample counter space and cabinet storage. Take a look at how I incorporated multiple shower heads, including a raincan in the ceiling, increasing the luxurious feel. It’s really timeless, and functions equally as a primary bathroom for adults, kids, or guests.
